Post Without a shred of decency...
Can anyone plz tell me a decent shred to learn?
I think the guitars in Dragonforce are cool an all, but they near impossible when your just starting out.
Wheres a kinda first-base place to start for shredding?
Same goes for tapping, I seena youtube vid of joe satriani playing midnight which sounds pretty cool, but how do you do that tapping with your fingers? Wheres a good place to start Smile

Done, found a couple but theyre pretty boring.
Im really looking for a song with shredding in it, rather than just up and down a scale 100 times...

Yea and about that finger tapping thing...I still cant get it right. I can tap with a pick, but maybe my fingers are just too soft to tap??

Tapping takes a little practice. I'm not fantastic but I'm pretty efficient, and as cliche as it sounds, the only way to get better is to practice. Really have to work on your aim, especially if you play Fender's like I do, with narrower string spacing.

if i were you i'd get a subscription to Guitar World, or a magazine like it, with song transcriptions in it, or find a good web-site where you can find transcriptions of songs that interest you.

even if your not ready yet to play Dragon Force, learning songs from different genres can help you start building the skills you will eventually need to get there, i swear i learned more when i sat down to learn "Under The Bridge" by the Chili Peppers than i've picked up in a while, just because i had to pick up new chords, a couple new techniques to play the song properly. you can learn something from almost any song.

start practicing scales, modes, etc. learn a couple of finger exercises to start building your left hand.

as far as "starter metal," a lot of the bands from the early nineties weren't extremely technical, but a good place to start to play metal, and build technique. you could probably get started with bands like White Zombie, Prong, and Pantera. bands that were around before nu-metal killed it.

Any shredder does what they do in their songs BECAUSE they "just went up and down a scale 100 times...", well, make that a million. No easy way out, Nutter. No compromises. Pay your dues like everyone else, and you will be good.

no matter what style you want to play.....the key to being good at it is to play...and play some more...and so on...

practise makes perfect , or at least a lot better Wink

it's also good to be able to play multiple styles of music at a decent level than to be AMAZING at one... i think that will get you farther

That's a really good point!! Knowledge in as many genres will give an amazing palette of voices to be able to call on in almost any situation. It certainly makes playing a whole lot more fun if, when jamming or writing you can throw a curve ball into the mix which often inspires the creative juices of the others you're playing with!

its all guitar playing...you can split hairs ,and make things overcomplicated , but its still just playing guitar.
some styles call for different things....but its still guitar playing.

play music....never get stuck in one style or another....just play.

practice...practice...and more practice

i might be an idiot....but thats the way i see it.

practice and technique give you the ability to release what you have in your head and your heart.

all the technique in the world wont help if you dont have anything to say .

and all the loud amps and hairspray wont help either Wink
