the main and the first one is for sure Cliff Burton - he is a real hero for bass guitar, one of the first guys whom used a distortion for a bass i love that sound. there are a lot of different bassists that i like/love/admire i can mention Steve DiGiorgio (one of the greatest - i recommend his fretless work on Individual Thought Patterns - delicious), Victor Wooten (not for slapping technique, but for a great feeling and groove), Billy Sheehan (he made me realise that i should use three fingers ), John Myung (very modest guy, but sometimes he shows a great style), Jaco Pastorius (for harmonics and much much more). i could talk about my inspirations for an ages - i think that this is good time to stop it (although i didn't mention many great artists - these are the names of guys i'm thinking about now)

i have quite a few favorite bassists:
1) my dad, who i partially blame for getting me into rock music and ultimatly bass
2) Mike Dirnt, from Green Day, because I got started playing his songs
3) Les Claypool of Primus just because he makes my life a living hell trying to learn Jerry Was a Race Car Driver.

Interesting topic because I have had some discussions with other music fans about who is the so-called best bass player. I keep getting told that Les Claypool from Primus is the best, but I disagree because for me personally, I don't care for his music and I prefer plucking over slap bass. So my pick is:
Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Saw him live twice last year and the is flat-out sick on the bass. When they played "By The Way" and he goes into his fast bass part in the song, his fingers were a blur....He also covers so much of the neck.
