weak signal on my jackson..

Postby masonvonritchie » Wed Dec 10, 2008 9:20 am

Ok so here's the situation: I have Jackson DKMG, with the stock EMG 81/85 combo in it. Sometimes the output signal on the guitar will start to fade out, kind of like when you have a crappy cable plugged in and you move it around a little bit and the sound goes out. Well I know the cable is good because none of my other guitars do this. The Jackson will do it on all the pickup selections, so that would lead me to assume the connections with the pickups are good. All I can figure is that there's a loose connection on the jack itself. I took the back plate of the guitar off and took a glance and everything looked fine, but then again I don't really know what I should be looking for. I know the battery is good because I put a new one in there a couple days ago. Any ideas?

a bad output jack shouldnt fade out and in .... even though you replaced the battery it could still be weak.

have you tested it ?

not yet. as long as i sit or stand still, without moving the cable around, it's fine. maybe i should take it into a repair shop and have them look at it, i'm just trying to avoid paying somebody else to fix it.

well ... if it fades when you move i would think it would have to be in the output jack.

can you MAKE the signal fade out by wiggling the cable around ?

Yes I can, but not every time. Sometimes I can giggle it around and it won't fade at all. Other times it will fade.

I'm hoping the jack is just worn out. Gremlins might be a little harder to fix.

could be a case of underpants gnomes gone guitar gnomes... and does the guitar have a signal booster in it... like the afterburner or anything... cause this kinda sounds like a problem i had with my old vanguerd and it was the afterburner turned down all the way.

No afterburner or booster. I was considering getting one after I get this problem fixed.

they WILL add some "ooomph" .... thats for sure.

another good option to have is a mid boost ....controlling the mids is one of the keys to great guitar tone.

mid boost, eh? is there a certain one that you would recommend? I looked on musicians friend and only found one and it's made by Fender but there aren't any reviews. I have been looking at an afterburner though. You can use those on passive setups too, correct?

my Jackson DKMG Dinky came with the Afterburner/ Turbocharger push/pull built in with the EMG-HZ passive pickups, so they do work for both.
and your problem sounds like it has to do with the input jack. it's probably a cracked solder joint or a loose wire of some sort. it's also possible that the jack might be rusty and needs a cleaner surface, but that's not likely.
I would suggest trouble shooting the whole thing and just clean, re-solder, and call a priest for the Gremlins(they can be quite pesky)
and spray electrical cleaner in the pots for good measure!

Everything looks clean inside but I'll probably re-do everything anyway. While I'm in there I might as well put in an afterburner..

the Active Mid Boost system that i have is the one that came in the Charvel Model 6's

it provides 6db's of mid boost.

i believe the EMG Expander is a mid boost ... check it out

and as for the output jack .... they are cheap and simple to replace ... so thats a good place to start.
