I don't know about those bands imparticular, but I do know of similar artists. For starters, I notice a lot of them mix chorus in with their distortion, and even use a wah pedal set to a certain point (see: Tool solo/lead work). Just for a start, but there are plenty of others who can help you here.

Theres so many users on here and your the only one whos given me your thought, thanks. haha hopefully more people take a look see if they can Help! By the way i have heard tool and their soloing but thats not really the music, style or sound im aiming for..... oh and i have used a chorus and a distortion but it doesnt gimme that sound im looking for, ive used so many pedals ... you wouldnt believe me! I go to the guitar stores near by sometimes buy 2-3 pedals at a time, and YOU know how they give you like a month... sometimes more, incase you wanna return them, with the receipt..... Well i always get pedals, and like 2 days before the receipt date expires for the return i go to the store and return them (unless i like em which is rare) and like most of the people working the stores here already know me cuz im always doing that haha BUT THAT CANT SAY NOTHING its your money, and if your not happy with the product... RETURN IT! its fun haha its like having unlimited pedals (temporarily) haha. But anyhow thanks for your advice/response. Gotta go man, peace.

i went to utube and listened to the All That Remains tune....
the solos sound double tracked to me ....try a little delay or something when you play it ,or maybe a shot of chorus to help fake the double parts.

see if that helps. Very Happy

Or spend $5,000 on an Eventide harmonizer, that ought to do the trick :p

May be a little bit of flanging going on there, too... I have all the In Flames albums, but cannot find Steps Of Silence anywhere in their discography, nor can I find the Enforsaken track. Listening to the All That Remains track (an interesting mix of nice sounding music and stuff that's just not very good!), if it's the sound I think it is, just sounds like the lead's being played with the neck pickup, with a little chorus and a hint of flanger on there (and obviously it's double tracked, because there's a harmony going on there, but the other guitarist is playing rhythm behind it!). Nice guitar sound, sounds almost too smooth to be a Mesa Dual Rectifier, although that's what I think the amp is...

i have that carcass album, and know of the sound, unless you buy all of the exact equipment you can't get that exact sound. i think like everyone said, distortion and chorus. what amp and guitar are you playing through?

Yah you basically combine all the common effects, chorus, a little delay, maybe a little flange, and then pair it with heavy distortion and you can do a decent job of emulating it.

i am not that great at hearing every little effect in an album ...but you agree about the chorus or delay to fatten up the sound ?

yeah, it seems like every awesome guitar tone nowadays has some sort of delay on it, that has to be the key to the sound he's looking for. if he's trying to get that exact sound he wont, you gotta settle somewhere close?

that's one of the reasons why I like reading as many guitar mags as possible! Sometimes when songs are transcribed the mags include things like effects and effects set-ups. Guitar World also has a section where you can write to the mag asking a certain artist a question regarding gear or technique. Another option is to go to the band's website and post questions there... sometimes all it takes is some research such as looking at the websites of some of these guitar mags and perusing their back issues then purchasing the back issue of the mag with that song... hopefully the info will be there. (i know... not very reassuring or helpful... [shrug...])
