The joys of the tube amp
We had a nice long band practice tonight, and towards the end, my tube amp started to crackle and fade. Upset and irritated, I turned it off and used a backup solid state head for the rest of practice. After practice, I cranked the tubes back up and it worked just fine.
Was she just a little too hot?

do all of your tubes glow the same when your amp is on ?
you can always do the old "pull a pair" of power tubes and see if the noise is still there.
if you do pull 1 pair , you will just be running on half power....if you have 1 bad tube , that can get you through the gig or practice.

all 4 power tubes glowed nicely like normal. I couldn't see the preamp tubes because they're covered and the metal covering was too hot to remove in practice.

were you pushing the power amp hard for a long period when it made the noise ?
if not , i wouldnt think your amp would have gotten that hot.

I was pushing it pretty hard. I'll do a full inspection tonight before practice and see what's going on in there.
It was the first time with this amp that I really rocked it hard for 2+ hrs.

havung a fan blow on the back of the amp will do wonders ....its a simple thing that can save you a ton of grief.
keep 'em cool , and they last forever

I opened up the lid, checked it out, warmed it up, played it, and all seems well. The 4 EL34s and 4 12AX7s glowed a happy yellow.
Hooray for intermittent failure!

for some reason, steve vai likes to put a fan on his face to play better... maybe we should all try to put a fan on our amps and our face too. ha
