Try Mesa Dual Rectifire - Petrucci uses Mesa amps... I like H&K TRI AMP very much. It gives wide variety of sound - 3 channels, 6 gains... You can set it to eaverything

IMO Marshalls are really good in this kind of music . Try JCM series... JCM2000 is really good amp - it's sound kills. It has a lot of gain so you won't have problems with it

Any multigain tube amp(whether its a Carvin, Peavey, Marshall, Mesa/Boogie, etc) will do. You also need a delay pedal, fast guitar like an Ibanez or Jackson, and the ability to shred. I'd recommend a Peavey 6505, XXX, or a JSX.

I have a Laney Pro Tube 100. It sounds great when shredding as well as just doing heavy chord progressions. I have four EL34 power tubes, and four 12Ax7 preamp tubes in it.

 best amp for shredding
It all depends on your style dude and what sound you want for yourself and fits best with how you play. you cant always use the amps the big pros use because you will sound just like them. unless you're in a cover band?
I use a marshall to shred and its perfectly good. when i want that extra shred sound i do a little trick with the Metal Zone distortion pedal. I turn the distortion on it completely off and i raise the other equalizers on it while using my marshalls distortion. and it gives you the perfect sound. its a little recording secret i found out but it works great live too. try that if you wana get good shred sound with out wasting too much money. the big studios use this technique.

So basically the pedal increases the output of the signal before reaching the amp's overdrive? Sweet, I would have never thought of that. That like effectively switches out the pickups in one's guitar to supermegaultra EMG high outputness as long as the pedal is on.
I guess you could say it makes your guitar go to 11.

I don't play shred myself, but a friend of mine in a local metal band plays through a B-52 AT-100. Unsure of the price on the thing but it sounds amazing. I went and saw them just Friday and was thoroughly impressed with the tone he got out of it.
