 Satanic scale ;)
I've heard sth about one scale that was prohibited in middle ages - it was called "Diabolus in Musica" or sth like that . Do you know anything bout this??

something to do with the triad.
I was playing in D minor and i played a C# as like an accidental or something and my friend said something about that scale being illegal in the middle ages or something

you know, i got interested and decided to look into things myself. i did a search on the 'satanic music scale' and read this article
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/4952646.stm
if you read it, it talks about something called the devils interval. otherwise known as the tri-tone. it is a very dissonant interval and alot of people shy away from it in their music. i have been studying this interval a bit in my music classes here at school and it has become one of my favorite intervals to work with honestly. (no, i am not satanic. far from it) i looked some other places and it seems that there is no devil's 'scale', just the interval.
just thought i would throw that at you guys. hehe

Black Sabbath used it in their self titled song. Its very common in Metal and Rock.

yeah it really is. it's all over the place. but in the majority of music circles, it isn't called the devil's interval. it's just the tri-tone. the devil's interval is more a slang term. here in my music classes, my professor addressed it as both so we would know

yeah. my music teacher taught me about this... the flattened (or diminished) 5th is the devils interval, said to unleash the devil with its eerie dissonant sound in the middle ages. there is no classical works that use this. or any of the modes with a flat 5th like locrian, was not used beause it had that interval... example: play an A note on the 5th fret on your low E string... then play the Eb on the 6th fret of the A string.... very dissonant... the devils note.... add the octave of your A note and you have what i like to call the devils chord.... oddly enough, that flattened fifth is also the difference between a minor pentatonic and a blues scale... it has changed from the devils note to the blues note over the years. and is now used exclusively in blues.

I like the 5th interval better then the flatten 5th. The 5th interval is what makes power chords and I couldn't image Heavy Metal without Power Chords.
And for scales I really like the Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor.
I love playing around with Delay and the harmonic minor and getting that cool harmony sound.

meh, the thing about perfect 5ths is that they are WAY to common. yes, they make up metal. true. and i like it. but, look at bands like dream theater. they incorporate SO much more into their music. it's insane. petrucci might being doing power chord 5ths but the keys and bass are filling in the gaps. taking these past few semesters of music theory here at school have really opened up my eyes to how music really works. i have 2 or 3 more semesters left with it and i can't wait
