I played the 6 string for about 17 years before I made the leap. I got my first 7 string in November of 2006, but for 5 or so years before that I had an Ibanez 6 string that was strung and tuned like the low 6 of a 7 string, only with the low B dropped to A. This was ok for low chunky riffs, but without a high e string it was not very handy to solo on or chord with. It gave me a bit of familiarity with the 7 string patterns, but seemed harder to play and more frustrating than playing a real 7 string. If you are comfortable with the 6 string chord patterns, capable of some basic improv, and otherwise are familiar with your guitar, then I would say the jump to the 7 string isn't a big deal, and will only build on your knowledge. If your guitar is still a bit of a stranger to you, then the 7 string might feel like a completely different instrument and may require some "relearning." But who's to say, maybe learning on the 7 string first might be better, but that isn't how it worked for me. Of course, 7 strings were extremely uncommon back then.
