But I'm wondering Sam, how long had you been playing 6 string before you got a 7 string?

I played the 6 string for about 17 years before I made the leap. I got my first 7 string in November of 2006, but for 5 or so years before that I had an Ibanez 6 string that was strung and tuned like the low 6 of a 7 string, only with the low B dropped to A. This was ok for low chunky riffs, but without a high e string it was not very handy to solo on or chord with. It gave me a bit of familiarity with the 7 string patterns, but seemed harder to play and more frustrating than playing a real 7 string. If you are comfortable with the 6 string chord patterns, capable of some basic improv, and otherwise are familiar with your guitar, then I would say the jump to the 7 string isn't a big deal, and will only build on your knowledge. If your guitar is still a bit of a stranger to you, then the 7 string might feel like a completely different instrument and may require some "relearning." But who's to say, maybe learning on the 7 string first might be better, but that isn't how it worked for me. Of course, 7 strings were extremely uncommon back then.

This summer I will reach 1/17 of 17
I will have played one year.
I keep feeling that I should play my 6 string for a few more years before I go 7 string, but the idea of playing on 7 strings is so tempting :(

It doesn't hurt to hit the music shops and see how they feel. You'll know when it feels right. If that's the direction you want to go musically and your guitar isn't satisfying that, it might cause you to lose interest, which would be a shame.

dunlop orange picks all the way! not too hard and not too soft!

btw, whats the point in the metal ones, apart from tricking new players into breaking all their strings?!?

Red Dunlop Jazz III

and sometimes I use those Brain picks... the ones with the texture for better grip.

But it's mostly the Jazz III...red :)
