Post p bass vs. j bass
ok so my band has a cheap squire p bass.
and i was thinking bout getting a new one(better)

and i like jazz... so jazz bass was the first to come to mind
then i was like... but what if we whana play some thing metaly.. or hard rock..

so the question is
is there enough difference
between the p and the j
to constitute owning both?

You can play anything you want on a Jazz bass. Geddy Lee of Rush comes to mind. Also, Chris Wolstenholme of Muse (listen to the bass intro to "Hysteria" for a big, overdriven sound). The J bass' neck is narrower, I believe. There are other differences, of course. I really prefer the J bass... as you can tell. Twisted Evil

I like the Jazz much better than the Precision basses. Much more versatile. I like to get a bit funky with my bass and the J bass just lends itself to it.

You can play virtually any style on either bass. I have one of each. The P-bass is more botom-heavy, while the Jazz has more mids. The Jazz has single coils so it may have some hum if you play really loud or in an unshielded environment (near video/computer screens, flourescent lights, or a gound loop). The P-bass has a humbucker so it's not as noisy.

Always have a backup, even for bass.
