Post Nylon?, Steel?, Classic?... newbie
First post, so hello.

I played guitar for a few years as a child, now I've decided to start up again, I'd imagine it would be smarter to save electric for later, but one thing i'm unsure on is which type f Acoustic/Classic to get?, from what i've read its pretty much "pick your preference" but I can't seem to find good comparison samples, the type of music I like would be:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Drv45pxauc0 - Nirvana - Something In The Way

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njG7p6CSbCU - John Lennon - Working Class Hero

What type of stringed guitar would be best for someone who is a fan of this music?, if anyone has any particular models in mind, I don't want to spend TOO much, but I want a decent guitar ya know Wink .

Thanks for any help!

welcome! and make sure to introduce yourself on the welcome thread under general guitar discussion. Very Happy

as for your question, ibanez makes some REALLY decent acoustic for cheaper than what you might think. 400 would get you a good guitar. it's good to learn on acoustic as it builds your callouses on your fingers really quick and helps you build endurance while playing

While I love the classical nylon sound, I would recommend the steel string acoustics because maintenance is so much easier. I also like the sound too. If you are playing a nylon string guitar it will be quiet and you will usually will need to be finger picking.

It's nice to have both sounds for recording, but don't expect to do much string bending on a Nylon

From a guitar teachers point of view, unless you are that very rare creature who plans to play only classical guitar, starting on a nylon string guitar is a huge disadvantage, and seven out of ten non-classical beginners on classical guitars drop out of lessons within the first six months. There are a number of reasons for this- the width and thickness of the neck is the most common reason, followed by the fact that it is not possible to reproduce the sounds the student hears in most of the music he or she listens to and is inspired to learn by, unless they are a classical guitar fan.
Overall, there is a 20% difference in learning time on a classical guiter, meaning a loss of motivation in the student is almost unavoidable. In many cases, when they hit bar chords they drop out.
The most effective guitar for most beginners ( again, excluding Classical students) is a steel string which has had the strings switch to extra-light, with the 1st a .010, after around two months, the string size is increased to .011s, then after another two months to whatever suits them.
Hope this helps, Chemical.
