 Multiple Bands
do any of you guys have more than one band and are stuck as to what to do when you come up with a great sounding riff?
I have 2 bands and whenever I create a riff i dont know which band to follow it with.
Anyone else in the same situation?

thats why my bands are all different genres. i have a punk band, a blues band, a thrash band and a black metal band. so whenever i cme up with a riff, it goes to whatever band suits it best.

Yup, this is a problem....
Often when I write, the stuff just doesn't fit with www.theshineonline.co.uk, so I've got a "solo" project going where I can write and record anything I like.
Very liberating and encourages me to experiment, knowing that wherever the music goes there'll be something cool at the end.

 Two Bands, One Guitist/Writer
I'm in the same boat. I write the music for the two bands I'm in and they play completely different styles: Here's what I do. If a song/riff more feels like it belongs in one band rather than the other I try in that band. If the song/riff sits on the fence I try it with both bands and see which one it works with.

Only one band that's currently on hiatus so I can't say I've ever had that problem. I'd imagine that you'd just have to feel out if the riff would work with one band or the other. Hopefully they're different enough styles that you know what would work with whom.

i had exactly that same situation, but finally i decided to pass one band and now i am really satisfied because of that decision. i can concentrate on one thing - results are much better i think.

just like you guys im in two bands and my own thing; im in a politically and socially charged punk band, its not that technical, but i have added some solos(with tapin and brief sweeps) but if i go nuts it doesnt fit the music all that well(im trying to). im in another band thats more metal, and when i come up with some heavy riffs or thrashy style chords i will use those for that band or my own solo project if its too experimentally weird(such as awkward time changes or something with a feeling that doesnt fit the band)

I actually enjoy being in 2 bands, but that is only because one is a serious band, the other is strictly for enjoyment. Any song that doesn't make it into One Man's Opinion, I just keep for my own band which pretty much is just me and a buddy of mine filling in on Drums. He, however has a little project he does his own stuff with and I fill in on bass and add a couple of guitar tracks if needed. It's almost a necessity working with both extremes for me.

I play guitar in one band and bass in a second band. Both bands are different enough from each other that I always know where to put which riffs.

being in 2 bands is great for personal enjoyment, but for me, it really pisses me off when a band mate is unavailable cos they're in another band.
It's sort of like they're not taking it seriously. Anyone know what i mean?

 Two Bands
I agree with the last post. It's hard for scheduling. The other band I play with has Klaus from the Dead Kennedy's and Greg from the Avengers. When one of the three bands (including my primary band) goes on tour things come to a grinding halt. However, we all knew this going into the project so we work around it. The thing I love about playing in this side band is that it forces me to play differently. This makes me a better player because it technically challanges me. I also like playing with the guitarist from the Avengers (Greg Ingraham) because he is a much better guitarist than me so it raises the bar for me to learn more technically challanging riffs.
