Barres are really consequential. I started my guitar education with learning songs I liked... Firstly of course were chords and similar stuff but later I started to learnd for example Seek & Destroy of Metallica...

Find something that's harder than hell for you to play and chip away at it every day. Even if you only get a few measures down it's still progress. When you're done devoting a nice chunk of time to that find some easy songs to learn. Expands your repetoire and builds confidence. Your fingers will be all ready to go after mangling them on the hard stuff. You'll figure out the easy stuff in no time and feel like a million bucks.

Seek for some videos with guitar lessons. IMO one of the best is Rock Discipline but there are a lot of this stuff.

Find some exercises a try to play them with metronome from my own expirience I know that rhythm is the last thing that a beginner guitarist cares for and it's the MOST vital element in any kind of music

Learn the notes on the fretboard. Then start learning scales. Do warm-up exercises like 1234, 1324 ,1432 etc. Look for tabs of songs you like and start playing them. There are many things you can do, to play better. Just make sure you won't be bored of them. That's why I told you to play the songs you like.

When you'll get better try some different techniques like sweep picking or tapping

 learning guitar help..
Hey man, congrats on learning those major chords. If you are interested in putting those to good use and learning some excellent songs that use variations on those as well as minor chords, try learning some Dave Matthews stuff. The songs are great and Dave is an excellent player that any guirtarist could learn from. If you really want to take your playing to the next level start learning some Eric Johnson songs.

Those finger exercises are the way to go man. Don't give up! I still use them daily as a warm up drill so you never really stop using them.
Remember to have fun--while you are playing those scales and exercises, turn on your effects and wah pedals.

 Better Playing
Hey Man,
I love to hear about people that are new to playing because it reminds me of what I have to do to improve my own playing. Learning something that is just outside of your skills is a great suggestion. However, don't make it too complicated or you might get frustrated. One thing to consider is your rythym playing. All the guitarists I know that are working professionals compain about the same thing when they see bands that are new: Sloppy rythym playing. Being a good rythym guitarist is not as easy at it appears. Start now and you'll be rewarded. I got a gig with a guitar player that was a hero of mine growning up because I could play solid rythym guitar, not because of my lead work.
Learn to play by ear. I can read music but its much easier to sit down and play a CD and then mimic what I just heard. For your lead work, you should start with simple leads and build up to more complex playing. Remember that it takes time. I still watch videos and use lead books. Beware most tabs because they tend to be partially correct. If a band is playing a fast transition, the guitarist probably isn't playing a fully "barred" chord. You just can move that fast with all your fingers in the proper position.
Don't get discouraged. Progress comes in bits and pieces!

The most important thing right now is to enjoy playing the guitar. If you don't then you won't want to play and it is a waste.
Think of what kind of music you want to play and learn that.
Chances are Barre chords will be the next thing to learn and pentatomic will help too.
