Jazz or classic?

Postby Prika » Fri Sep 05, 2008 6:04 pm

Hi

I know this question is kinda stupid but I would like to learn how to play guitar.
I have to chose between jazz and classic guitar. But i don't really know the difference.
Can anyone help me out?

I'd like some comments on what you like most too.

thanks
Prika

hmm.. well there both about equally as hard, but It should be something you like. what do you like more Bach, Behtovin, and Mozart or Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin. I will say that your more likely to get into a jazz band then a classical band, but studieing either will help playing other styles of misic like metal blues and rock like Randy Rhoads and Richie Blackmore did.
just listen to some stuff and think about what you want to do!

You probably don't know this, so I'd better inform you.
The most important difference is, that classical guitar is being played with fingers and has a lot of dynamics. Which means that it's meant to be played as solo most of the time and is very delicate. All the notes you do must be played with feeling and you will have to learn to use 4 fingers (sometimes even 5) to play with your right hand.

Jazz guitar is played with a plectrum and on electric guitar (Possibly on acoustic at the beginning?). Jazz requires some complicated tremolo picking...the ups and downs which is the first thing you'd be taught. You will use a lot of scales over the whole neck.

Think of what you like more...Listen to some classical guitar(Which is mostly spanish and italian) then listen to some jazz. If you like something better, you'll have a stronger will to learn it and so make it easier for yourself.

And like @Mike Hays said, you can use classical to combine with rock and metal like Blackmore did, or combine jazz with rock and metal, like Robert Fripp and Mclauhlin did.

First just listen to the stuff and think what you'd like better...playing in a big band or on a stool solo with a classical guitar.

I say Jazz. There are a lot of things that are thought trough Jazz, and not in the Classics. for example, a lot of scales, complex chords, modal system, things, that may come handy when it comes to improvisation, or even in understanding the system of a song. why certain chords come after certain ones. Improvisation is an other thing, you are not likely to learn through Classics.

but the decision is yours, do what you like. what I do, is learn Jazz, and use it's knowledge in Rock.
