he is finger picking it with thumb and ring finger and hitting the open string with the middle its a classical style if that isn't comfo for you try thumb and middle on the two notes played together

Thanks for your reply. I guess what I'm most confused about is which strings is he playing and when is he playing them. In the youtube video, clearly Paul is playing more notes than I have listed in the TAB.

yeah looks like he is playing with the open note and the 12th fret note going like
