guitar strings and locking bridges

Postby chuck » Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:16 am

i have a question for everybody ...

when you put strings on a guitar with a double locking bridge , do you clip the ball end , or put the string in backwards ...with the ball end at the tuners ?

i am an old geezer , i still prefer to cut off the ball ends off the string...call me old fashioned :D

how do you do it ?

Well, I personally put the stings in backwards with the ball end at the tuners. Its just easier that way.

I cut, but I think Eric is right. Prolly easier to just use the ball ends at the top. Heck, I clip both ends, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Excellent point.

I especially like it when I am admiring the string coil rings up close and then they unravel and gouge out my eye. Good times!

OK, here is my rational for having the ball end at the tuners.

Let's say you clip the ball end off, you have 3 options:

1) You can clip the excess string off the headstock, but you always want to leave a lil bit in case of slippage. So you end up with this tiny finger pricker of death poking out of each tuner.

2) You can do nothing and leave the excess sticking out. This WILL put your eye out. There are no pirate guitar players Arrrg.

3) You can coil up the excess in a little gayed up ring.

Ah...the demise of many a guitarist.

Actually, here is a tip. Once you have your strings on, instead of clipping the end off with cutters, grab the excess string and work it back and forth at the capstan. it will work-harden the string causing it to break off right at the capstan, thus, no finger-pricker of death.

Umm...I kinda think you, Chuck, talking about loopty-loops, has got to be some sort of cosmic violation that will only end in tragedy. Please stop.

What I do is: after the strings are all tuned, give 'em all a 90 degree outward turn so they're all facing outwards from the headstock. That way, i know NEVER to grab the guitar head-on by grabbing at the headstock.

All in good fun my friend, but there is an alternative to string castration.
