Post Guitar for Dummies.
Hello, here's my question and i would really appreciate and advice. I've always wanter to play guitar, but i simply don't know where to start. I don't have a guitar and don't have any knowledge of music (except that i like it) and i don't have any friends who play guitar well enough to teach me the basics. Help?

Well... you gotta buy a guitar.
Check out your local guitar shops. Fellow guitar players are mostly helpful and willing to give advice. Kinda like having this site, you know? We're always willing to tell each other how awesome we are and how to make each other MORE awesome.

Don't get taken taken in by a (eck!) salesman. Find someone who will help, not try to take your money. I believe I'm correct in saying that most of us prefer Mom 'n Pop stores to big Megastores.

A good idea is to research guitars by starting with what the players you enjoy listening to are using for equip.

Then, hell... ask us on this site, we'll give you a hundred different answers, but it'll help narrow it down. Cuz playing guitar is a different flavor for everyone. I like chocolate ice cream but you might like strawberry, which i can only eat so much before it makes me gag (like when I listen to My Chemical Romance). Or go through previous posts and read what everyone has said in the past.
As Guitarfreakyman would say, "Cheers, mate!"

Disagree completely!

Mom 'n Pop stores are typically struggling and are DESPERATE to get your money at any cost. "Megastores", while having their jerks, also have good, knowledgable salespersons that recognize REPEAT customers are what drives business. Not only that, but "Megastores" typically have a greater selection and lower prices, because they can AFFORD to have lower prices, and have better contracts with the manufacturers.

I used to work for Guitar Center in Houston (store 442) a long time ago (back in the late 90's) as the Accessory Department manager (effects, cables, microphones, wireless systems, straps, picks, strings, etc.), and I can honestly say that the MAJORITY of salespeople that worked along side me and for me genuinely cared about steering people towards the right gear for them, ESPECIALLY because of the "Megastore's" return policy....something which Mom-n-Pop stores generally do not have.

I'm not trying to take food out of anyone's mouth, because I know there are people on this forum that work for some "Mom-n-pop"s, but there is the truth of it.

not all mom and pop store are good or bad. But you do have to do some research and don't as said be taken in by a salesman with that they can't go lower then this or that. Guitar Center does usually have some great deals and are willing to go a little lower if you go in and know that you can get it cheaper some where else. Check some online stores like Musician friends and others to check out prices before going to any stores. Once you find a price that you can offer go to your local store and look for the guitars or guitar you want and do some haggling. Once you get the price you can live with from them you need to check out the guitar for a straight neck this is easy to do by putting either on the floor and looking down the neck if you see a bow anywhere tell the salesman that you want to look at another guitar of the same brand and tell him why. Play the guitar also you want it to feel comfortable. Also you don't want the strings to be really far apart from the fretboard.
Hope this helps a little
