I think one "guitar" album that frequently gets over-looked, but there is absolutely phenomenal writing and playing on it is "Rust In Peace" by Megadeth. in one band i was in, i was tossing around the idea of doing a cover of "Holy Wars/The Punishment Due" but i found singing over the bizarrely complicated verse riff really tough.

as far as more recent, i really like what Meshuggah does, they write great riffs, and Lamb of God.

The best album in the world - MASTER OF PUPPETS
Moreover, I like very much first Maiden's albums - IRON MAIDEN and KILLERS. Of course I cannot say nothing 'bout Black Sabbath - Paranoid and Heaven and Hell are really good guitar albums.

here is a little satriani trivia....in the silver surfer comic back in the late 80's , they named a planet "satriani" in honor of joe.
