so someone told me once that Gibson serial numbers depict the year the guitar was made. either the last two numbers, or the first two numbers or something of that nature. i recently got an SG for christmas and was trying to figure what year it was. does anyone know how exactly this serial number thing works?

I don't think the number of the year itself appears in the serial number, but the serial number itself will correspond with a year, make and model, of that of the guitar. Almost all manufacturers do this.

i have a chart somewhere that tells you how to descipher a Gibson serial number ....i will look for it

Except for the Custom Shop reissues and LP Classics and a few other oddly-numbered models, the year is the first and fifth digit of the serial number on modern Gibsons. The 3 numbers in between are the day of the year on which the guitar was built/stamped.

So, if your serial # started with the numbers 93655, it would mean that the guitar was stamped on New Years' Eve, 1995. The remaining numbers at the end of the serial number indicate which plant it was made at, iirc.

If you have a modern guitar that has a number higher than 366 in the second through fourth spots, it could indicate a fake, since no year has more than 366 days.

I've always wonder what my reissue was its got a G in and 005 as the number I know that the G stands for a month but not sure what one...lol
