You can start using whatever guitar pleases you
As long as it works and you can afford it
I like the idea of using a cheap dodgy guitar to start with
Cos then once you start sounding good, you know you actually are good
Then you can buy a better quality guitar and atleast know what you're doing
Theres nothing worse then seeing someone whos absolutely crap with a better guitar then you....
However, its also good to get an awesome guitar to start with
Cos then you have more motivation
'I have an awesome guitar, I gotta be an awesome guitarist to play it'
Its all up to you
I personally started with a Fender Squire Strat pack thing
Cheap as and comes with all the beginner equipment you need

If I were you I would start with classic guitar... They have really wide necks what streth your hadns well... Moreover, playing really heavy stuff on hi gain drive is much more difficult than classic guitar.

Are you wanting to play electric or acoustic? Are you wanting to spend a small amount of money or is that not an issue? In my humble opinion there is no better way to start than with a good acoustic that you can find at any guitar store for under $250. Go pick out a salesman and ask what his opinion is about you as a beginner, etc. Pick a few different guitars up and see if you like how one feels over the rest. Don't worry about not being able to shred like that guy you passed on the way through the store. Get an inexpensive tuner. If you want to buy an electric guitar, you will spend a little more to get rolling, but not much more including a small practice amp and cables. Again, choose a guitar and amp combo that sounds good yet doesn't break your bank account (it will eventually happen anyway as you discover various words such as "vintage" "flame maple" and "tube amp").
My first guitar was my brother's black epiphone acoustic. Then I started playing a guitar my father had given my sister for her high school graduation. I then bought an amp and within a month had purchased my first (ha!) USA Stratocaster. Then the next thing you know I have many thousands of dollars of guitars and amplifiers and effect pedals and yada yada yada... Good luck!

MAKE SURE you get a TUNER and if it feels great buy it. Don't worry about brand or price... if it feels great and sound good get it!!!

I started with acoustic and IMO it's really good way to start... The only thing yu need is guitar and tuner(it's not necessary). I this option you can buy better stuff than buing electric(guitar is not everything... Small amp, cables...).
Basic electric set is:
Guitar
Small amp
1 cable
Some picks
It's good idea to buy new set of strings with new guitar

when you start, basically you need anything that plays decent and reflects the sound/genre of music you are looking to play, and (let's be real) something that's cheap in case you don't stick with it.
go for something used: you'll get a better guitar for less money of you buy used. make sure it's something you'll be excited to pull out of it's case when you pull it out to practice. at first, in the struggle to get started, it's important to just keep motivated.

The conventional wisdom always says to buy an acoustic guitar first, learn all the basic major and minor chords, and use it to strenghten your fingers. But if you want to start out on an electric guitar, Fender puts out a nice beginner package which includes a Fender Squier Stratocaster, amp, cord, gig bag, and picks. Not a bad beginner set-up for a reasonable price. You can really improve this guitar with some quality strings too. Find out if you like playing and then upgrade. You can always sell this package off to buy your next set-up. A chromatic tuner is valuable too. You can't learn to play well if your not properly tuned. Finally, at least early on you might want to take a few lessons. There's lots of instructors who are pretty reasonable in their rates. Check with your local music store.

honestly, my parents bought me an acoustic when i was about 10 or so, and i did very little with it for a couple of years.
when i was about twelve, a neighbor gave us an electric guitar and an amp, that's when i really learned to start playing. you can do a great deal more with an electric, and unless you want to play folk music in coffee shops, you need an electric guitar.
whatever music it is that you are listening to, you need to start playing, so you don't loose interest, and generally that means having an electric guitar.

I love electric but often I take my acoustic to my hands... Acoustic has similar neck to electric so you can play songs dedicated for its with no problems. After few months you would like to play some ballads and acoustic is the best stuff to this... Moreover, electric and camp?? It's not good idea...

 first guitar
LOL my first guitar (which I got at the age of 13, I think?) was a nylon string spanish acoustic that one of my dads mates wired up to make it electroacoustic. He also built me this small wooden amplifier that would go into overdrive if you tured it right up.
I used to whack the strings guitar with an old 50pence piece, trying to make it sound like Nirvana!
Its all scratched to hell! The electronics looked mental on it too!
Anyway nice wee story, but for a first guitar I would recommend a steel string acoustic. The temptation too much there to make a load of noise with an electric if yr starting off... which can be good, but won't make you a better guitar player!
