 First electric
Hi,
I'm looking at gettin my first electric guitar
i like the look of the epiphone em1 and i've heard good things about it, does anyone have any experience with it?
http://www.musicstreet.co.uk/epiphoneem1electricguitarebony-p-2146.html?osCsid=e1d76042abdd55f18c9e3df6f3476a94
I've also heard yamaha pacifica are good and would be a better all round instrument? anyone have a view on them?
And also what amps should i consider, since i haven't got a clue about them?
thanks

well, to start with i think any guitar is good. (Though i would suggest going to a guitar shop and playing with a few different types.)
Would this be your first guitar of any type? or have you got an accoustic or similar?
Amps, you need to know what you are going to use it for?
if your just playing at home then a 5-10w amp would be fine, ive got an 'orange crush' 10w amp and I like the sound out of it but i could not use it for any live performance.

hmm, this would all depend on your budget and what styles you are looking to play... once you have those, then start looking for a gutiar

it looks like a descent guitar.
most epiphones are good guitars/value for the money.
if you like the way it plays and sounds....go for it.
YOU are the one who will be playing it.

The Ibanez starter packs are good, at least for starting.

i had an ibanez starter pack and it was decent, needed a set up bad though. My first 'real' electric was an epiphone black beauty. Epiphone makes some great instruments, despite how much people just say they're a gibson knock-off brand

get familiar with craigslist.org and find a "real" guitar and don't bother with starter guitars, because a) they are not as good and b) they won't hold their value. Here are some general guidelines:
Although there are a few exceptions, if it LOOKS like a stratocaster, but it is not a FENDER, it probably came out of a starter pack.
The following brands are the "out sourced" version of the name brands (which means the company does not want to damage their reputation by you associating these guitars with their name):
Squire (Fender)
Sigma (Martin)
Applause (Ovation)
Epiphone* (Gibson)
Lyons (Washburn)
First Act**
*Epiphone instruments are actually really good, especially in their value, and there is no shame whatsoever in getting one.
**First Act is its own brand, but its claim to fame is the Wal-Mart guitar and the "comes free with a volkswagon" guitar. I would avoid.
As Blackmore said, Ibanez starter packs are pretty good (you can tell because Ibanez is willing to put their name on the headstock), but I still would not recommend getting a starter pack, because you will spend the same money on quality used gear that holds its value if you don't take the starter pack route.
I would also recommend getting a modeling amp, because this will give you a chance to fiddle around and find out what style of music you want to play without breaking the bank buying a new amp on every whim or buying 99$ effects only to find out that you are sick of them in a week.
Also, when buying amps, don't be too swayed by high wattage and claims of "THIS THING GETS REALLY LOUD LOL!!!"
People like to sell amps by claiming they are loud. To put it in perspective, a 5-watt amp is the volume of a trumpet. I have never turned by 75-watt modeling amp above half-way, and my 30-watt tube amp can blow the 75-watt amp out of the water. Tone > volume.
Good luck!

yeah, thats how they're best known, but they have made some sweet custom guitars for alot of pros, and you can have your own made to your specs if you're willing to shell out the cash (usually acouple grand) They're really starting to grow in the music world. Some of the bands with custom guitars from them are:
Mastadon
Maroon 5
Taking Back Sunday
Los Lonely Boys
Aerosmith
System of a Down
Ministry
Every Time I Die
Maylene and the Sons of Disaster
Cheap Trick
The Almost
and touring guitarists for groups like:
Paul McCartney
Kelly Clarkson
Avrile Lavigne
Kieth Urban
so basically, whatever style of music you like, theres SOMEONE who's using a first act, and thats just some of people using them

still, I would avoid them. If Im shelling out cash, it isnt for a first act guitar.
