Post First electric
I've been playing the acoustic guitar for a few months now and i've decided that i want an electric guitar. My price limit is about 700$. I will primarily be playing Classic rock (mostly lynyrd skynyrd).

I want a guitar that sounds allot like lynyrd skynyrd's guitars. I don't know much about electric guitars. Is there a big difference between say a gibson and a fender? I believe the guitars they used were the gibson explorer, gibson sg, gibson les paul and a fender strat.

The guitar i'm leaning towards is the Gibson Faded SG Special it looks great and it had pretty good sound from what i heard at the guitar store.

So my questions are:

Is there a certain guitar/brand that would sound the most like lynyrd skynyrd?

Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about the Gibson Faded SG Special?

anything gibson will make your dreams come true. Very Happy and sg specials are nothing to scoff at at all. what you might want to look into is a high end epiphone... that 700 could go a long way going that route

You think an epiphone sg would be better than the gibson sg special? 700 dollars is my limit for the guitar itsself i can pay over that for things like an amp and strap.

a Gibson will be "better" than an Epiphone...but can you get the faded SG for $700 ?
if so...i would go for the Gibson.
but a nice Epiphone will save you cash that you can spend on your amp.

what amps are you thinking about?

keep in mind that a high end guitar through a cheap amp will still sound cheap.
but....a descent guitar through a high end amp will sound fine.

if you have to skimp on one....get the Epiphone and a better amp.

check out the BlackHeart Lil Giant 5 watt tube half stack for $250....that amp and an Epiphone SG would be a great combo.

you could get a great epi for 3-400 bucks. and chucks right. get a great amp and your guitar will sound better. best thing to do would be to play sg's through the amp your looking at when your shopping around

good point....if you play the model of guitar thru the model of amp you plan on buying (at cranked volume levels) then you will be far less likely to have an UNpleasant surprise when you get home and crank those power tubes.

its all about what guitar sounds the best thru which amp with you playing.

keep us posted on what you find.

another good amp choice is the Epiphone Valve Jr and the matching speaker cab.
but i think the BlackHeart is a better choice.
i havent played a BlackHeart yet.....but they are supposed to be super.

the Valve Jr needs an EQ section ...of course an EQ pedal could fix that.

That's great advice, thanks. Yes, you can get a Gibson SG Faded Special for about 580 bucks.

I hadn't realy thought much about amps. I'll have to go try some out at the guitar center.

I could probably spend 300 on an amp. I was hoping it wouldn't cost that much though.Sad I don't need a real fancy amp, but i want good sound.

How much do you suggest i spend?

honestly....the best sounding cheap tube amp i have played is the Epiphone Valve Jr.
mine was $99 new from the musicians fiend...they are $129 now.
the BlackHeart Lil Giant head is $149 and it has an EQ section.

the Lil Giant half stack seems like a steal at $249.
it would be an awesome first tube amp

the Valve Jr is as simple an amp as you can get.
it has 1 knob...volume. you just crank it and play.
its not a metal amp , but it will do for AC/DC and other classic / hard rock/blues...ect

the super simple layout forces you to use your guitars controls more, and to use dynamics and attack to get the different tones you want.
a simple tube amp can help you become a better player.

either amp would be a super choice , and not break the bank.
if you get that Gibson SG and a tube amp...you will have a sweet rig.
