have you looked at the line 6 stuff? i played through one of these over the summer playing bass and i loved it for live stuff. you can hook it up to your computer and recall a lot of effects and you can also record with it. it's REALLY versatile and i would recommend it. there are cheaper versions out there but i just picked this one to show you

sounds like you are describing a line 6 POD.

You could be talking about a boss muti-FX pedal from the GT series
Also you might be talking about the VOX tonelab series (which I believe contain a preamp tube or two)
You hopefully are not talking about the digitech RP series (I hate these little things).

the boss ones are good and have good sounds

the vox ones do have a preamp tube in them. the guitarist i traveled with over the summer had one of these and it sounded good... the tube added some nice warmth

and the rp series is the worst series known to mankind

Are you after a programmable effects unit?

ie you upload a distortion to pedal one, flanger to number two etc....

not sure they exist where you can use indemendant of the computer (with out spending lots on a programmable dsp chipset)
Native instruments do a nice bit of kit for this 'Guitar rig', but you need the computer connected at all times

failing that, look at the muse research's receptor
http://www.museresearch.com/receptor.php

this is basically a rack ounted pc that you can run vst plugin's on
one of those and a midi footpedal?

I own a Boss GT-5, and I love it. Way back when, when I used to work at Guitar Center, I used to sell the RP series all day long...and then they'd come back the next day, ALL DAY LONG! LOL.

Does anyone own NI Guitar Rig 3? I'm very interested in this. I wonder if the tone quality is better than my GT-5 (since it's about 10 years old!!) I'm not in a band or anything, so I play straight into my computer anyway.
