Post EMO Rock: The demise of lead guitar?
Okay, I'll go ahead and say it....I don't like the current state of rock with these "EMO" ("Emotional Rock" as they call it) bands like My Chemical Romance, AFI, Hinder, All-American Rejects, yadda, yadda, yadda topping record charts these days. Rock and roll in in a dismal state of affairs right now and I thought things were bad when rap/rock (as in Linkin' Park) was big! Can we please get back to bands and musicians with real talent?

Rock is without any direction and doesn't seem to know where it wants to go. In the early 80s you knew that it was "big hair metal." In the 90s, you knew it was grunge/alternative. Today, you've got a little EMO, a little neo-new wave (The Killers, The Strokes...hell, any band with the word "the" in fron of their name!) and a little of this and that....again with no clear-cut direction. Can anyone really say what is "in" right now? Steve Miller was quoted in Rolling Stone about a year as saying that "rock and roll is dead." Regretfully (and I mean regretfully), I have to agree. The norm now is R&B, Hip Hop, and Rap. If you check the pulse across most of America's high schools, kids will tell you that hip hop is it.

And these EMO bands lack creativity, they all sound the same, and they don't include lead guitar in their songs. When will the go away? I long for the glory days of guitar rock rife with creativy, meaningul lyrics, and lead guitar! "Long live rock! I need it every night".....(Roger Daltry)

yea this has bothered me for a long time now...rock is absolutely crap right now and the bands dominating the charts are bringing a disgracing to the name and meaning of rock. talent in todays "emo rock" bands is extremely limited and it seems that these bands are more worried about being "posers" and creating an "emo" image, rather than creating music, exploring music and setting new boundaries. these bands unfortunatley set the standard for rock...which compared to other eras...is extremely low in skill, technique and creativity.

saying this i think metal is on the rise...great, talented bands like all that remains, trivium, god forbid and killswitch engage are setting a great standard for musicianship, skill, creativity aswell as live performances. this is the standard i look towards when i play and write, because i believe that metal has real talent atm

seeing as metal went through a slump in the 90s, there is hope that rock will rise once again....i heard a song that was nice on the ears for modern day rock the ohter day by a band called hinder and yes this wason the radio!! also check out alter bridge and submersed for some great modern day rock....hopefully mark tremonti of alter bridge will succeed in resurrecting the rock guitar solo as he has succesfully demonstrated on the album....hopefully the standards will rise again and we can be as lucky as listeners in the 70s and 80s and ever 90s who enjoyed endless amounts of good rock n roll. and with the rise of rock and roll standards...more talent will follow because bands will have to be great to make it. i say bring back the guitar solo....some people may disagree with me here but kurt cobain is responsible for the death of the guitar solo and i really miss it but for the time being a im content with metal Smile once u can take the screaming u never look back (oh and i mean good screaming...no cookie monster impressions!!!)

LOL- even the very term emo is nauseating.
What? did rock not have any emotion before?

Theres nothing worse than when my band get stuck playing gigs with emo bands. Usually the folk in these bands just whine away. No memorable riffs or anything of musical merit I can hear... the tunes just meander along with nothing that really grabs you. No attitude or anything.

Its also hilarious when I'm playing Glasgow and one of these bands comes on before us. You get a wee guy singing like hes lived all his life in California. Then he'l speak into the mic: "awright troops, hows it goin ya dafties. This is a wee song fur ma burd!" lol

This whole emo thing makes me feel so old and out of touch...and I'm only bleeding 24!

Let's hope that music by whiney 16-year olds who sing only about how some girl broke their heart has no staying power and isn't around long. Can we please bring back guitar rock? Music has no "meat" right now.

Fuck Emo!!! fuck the eye liner, girl pants wearing mother bitches!! instead of all that pointless shit, they should sit down and practice their instruments. I have to agree the music scene anywhere is crap, over here theres nothing but Death Metal (i have nothing against Death Metal) and Emo bands...thats it. what ever happened to badass guitar solos!? I still turn up Megadeth and Malmsteen everytime and certain people dont even know who they are!. Its all these damn radio friendly bands that get force-fed to all these kids. fuck it! its better for us. i wouldnt want an emo kid running around with a Slayer or Megadeth shirt anyways.

If you would say that rock died a long time ago, I wouldnt disagree. It seems that the term "rock" is a blank canvas for Mtv to splatter on whatever they feel sells at the time. So you can call emo rock, but it aint rock, its just what sells at the time, and I think thats what word "rock" really means now ($). So until the guys wearing suits up in those big buildings I look up at everyday decided to quit making money, henceforth quit making rock, the name remains tarnished.[/img]

at a time I thought emo was ruining rock guitar..but lately..many of the emo bands I once hated have begun to embrace guitar work..everyone must realize that 3 years ago emo music was still relatively new and had to have a certain sound...just like early rock 'n' roll from the 50s..but now bands like Fall Out Boy are branching out into R&B sounds and yes..they have a couple solos on their newest album..My Chemical Romance have an excellent lead guitarist who plays solos on almost every song on their new album also..The Used will even have Zeppelin like riffs on their upcoming album..so overall..emo stopped guitar playing for a short while but is now bringing it new life..besides..after the 80s..we needed a break

I do not one bit like the idea of ONE genre owning the "Rock" direction, like the previous decades. Not everyone liked hair metal, and not everyone liked grunge. I like the idea of sub-genres and people who are able to create music that is out of the ordinary.

I personally would get dead board, if hair metal were to steal the "rock'n roll" scene.

Honestly, music is always growing.

There are two ways to deal with this annoyance:

One, don't pay attention to the media and what's "hot" on the popular music stations and radio, they are playing what they want YOU to hear.

Listen to music via the internet or friends who know your style and can help you find more bands/artists who deliver your preference.

Just because Alternative bands now are quite lacking, doesn't mean they are the FUTURE of rock.

And second..
Honestly, anyone one who plays an instrument and gets serious about their music "career" can add some stone to the growing pyramid of the rather large rock genre.

It has nothing to do with talent, it has to do with drive. People with drive will decide the future of rock. You can have all the talent in the world, but if a band is lazy and doesn't do what they have to do to make it, then the media will be full of these lackluster bands that you all complain about.

If you think rock is dead I would suggest checking out some post-rock (a strange name foa a sub-genre) I was very sceptical about it at first but this music is really something that can push rock to a totaly different direction than shitty emo. This music goes other way around no image and face painting stuff, hell sometimes even no wocals just pure instrumental rock music with great atmosphere. All I can add is that I normaly listen to extreme metal and I was really shocked that I can enjoy such calm music Smile

I think I agree with Dane

I would also add that I think it is dumb to label entire genres as bad, or talentless.

You should all know the drill by now with radio music. There are two reasons radio music becomes popular: 1)it is catchy, or 2)you can dance to it. It is not because it is full of talent or difficult or even particularly meaningful.

All American Rejects are kinda like this. They play real crisp and make pop/punk/emo songs that are simple and maybe a little juvenile but they can be real fun to listen to even if I could play along with the song the first ime I hear it.

When you really want to hear good music go to shows and look up other types of music. But there are a lot of talented musicians in the emo genre and there are plenty of phenomenal musicians whose music has already been influenced by emo music, especailly in hardcore/post hardcore/metalcore/screamo bands.

When you listen to new music its best to keep an open mind and see if you grow to like it, and even if you don't you should always ask yourself what you can learn from the music, even if its just needing to put more detail into recording, or needing to pretty up some vocals.

EMO bands are more ov a visual thing than musical. Lyrically, they try to make some "deep meaning" out ov the most random lyrics that make no sense. Their musicianship is shit. They only do it because it was the "cool thing to do" at their high schools or whatever. They don't try to further their "skill" on their instrument, because they don't feel it's important. Their little painted-on-clothing charade will eventually die when something else comes along that is even more useless.

I don't really listen to any of that pop shit that is passing for Rock these days. I play what makes my blood boil- POWER CHORDS, MONSTER RIFFS, and SCREAMING LEADS. The calmest thing I listen to is Dragon Force. The calmest thing I play are melodic power ballads. I agree with all of you that Rock doesn't seem to have any direction. It's up to us Guitar Heroes to bring it back to where it should be.
