 Drop E-flat? WTF?
Sorry for this question, but I have to ask it.
Ok, I've been having this discussion with a snot-nosed brat on a different guitar forum where I'm a moderator, and he claims that there is a tuning called Drop E flat. I've tried to convince him that there is no such thing, but he just won't give up.
I wouldn't normally care if someone wants to believe in something that doesn't exist, as long as they keep their beliefs to them selves, but he goes around the forum, confusing beginners with his talk.
Please tell me I'm right! It would be just my luck that it actually does exist, but I've played guitar for over twelve years so I think I would've known.
Again, sorry for asking.
Btw, I do realize that theoretically if a guitar were to be tuned down to F and then the sixth string dropped to E flat it would be drop e flat, but that's just silly.

a Drop D tuning is just taking your low E and making it a D.
I would think you could use that same logic for a drop Eb and just have the low E be a half-step down...

Yes, but when pressuring him about what an drop e flat is, his answer is a regular e flat tuning.

so the noob is confused. He's thinking it's a half-step down tuning. there are worse things.

Well, the noob calls me a stupid n00b.
As I said, I wouldn't normally care, but he tries to convince a beginner that he's right.
Aw... perhaps I should just ignore it. But thanks for answering! I just needed to be absolutely sure.

Technically there would be, but if they are saying it to new guitar players it would be wicked hard to take in to consideration to understand it. If it is drop E flat it would just be tuning your guitar to F and just making the 6th string an E flat hencing drop e flat.

That would be 5 1/2 step down! Plus the sixth lowered one note more.
Btw, could it really be drop e-flat with the sixth just one half step down? Drop d-flat isn't the sixth string dropped 1 1/2 step, it's the guitar tuned down 1/2 step and then the sixth string droped. Just theoretically speaking.

right... on one of our new songs, I have a Drop C# part where the guitar is a half step down, then I drop the 6th string to C#.
I imagine the tuning of Drop Eb would screw up your neck... tensioning your other strings up a half step.

Well one could tune the guitar to drop d and then put a capo on the first fret. Look there, he actually was right!

Or you could tune the guitar up half a step from standard tuning to reach F standard. Wouldn't "drop" tuning just be say you are in standard and you drop the E to D that would be "Drop" D tuning? Not D standard.
So when you say Drop C# you guitar is tuned to E flat just the 6th string is a C# correct?

But, as nocojack pointed out, the neck would probably not like that at all.
As far as I know the drop is always one whole step down compared to the normal note in the tuning you're using, so drop C would be the guitar tuned down one whole step and the 6th string another whole step. Or as In Flames (swedish death metal band) do it these days: Drop B flat - the guitar tuned to C and then the 6th dropped.

Maybe you can give us a link to the thread? I have a feeling the other guy is just a bit confused on his nomenclature. I suspect that he is actually talking about a dropped D flat tuning (or dropped C#, whatever) where you are 1/2 step under standard tuning and then you tune the Eb string a whole step lower (Db/C#). Basically, he's the N00bZ0rz.
Gotta link? (And is it in English? LOL)

Yeah, the neck would definantly not like that tuning, So IMO in theory there "technically" is a drop e flat, but I would not advise it nor recommend it on a guitar because it wouldn't really make sense and it could potentially harm your guitar.

Well I could give you a link, but it is in swedish.
The thing is, what he means is regular e flat tuning, so he is confused. What I did wrong was that I said that no such thing exists. And instantly felt "oops, am I really sure it doesn't?".
