i have a Saga LC-10 kit (les paul style), and it's not bad. i mean, i'm not like a master luthier or anything, and the action is pretty high, so i'm gonna take it in and get the neck reset. i had to file the nut down, and the tune-o-matic bridge as well as the machine heads are garbage. my advice to you would be to either do a strat or tele one, or really take the time to sit down and do the work. painting is a breeze, just tape off the binding and let 'er rip with a spray paint can (don't tell me it can't be done...).
and i spent a little over $200 to buy it, and added some Gibson machine heads, $40, some GFS pickups, $70 (great buy, lemme tell yyou) and i'm gonna replace the bridge, about $50. so for about $350-$400, you can make a nice guitar. but go for the PRS-style one.
