hey chuck I would like to know the books also. So I can figure out whats wrong with my laney tube amp. I think I have something loose in which the tube goes in one of the sockets for the pre amp tubes. All the tubes are new and so are the fuses. So it would be nice to figure why it isn't loud when using the sends only and sounds really bad when using the inputs. Don't know what the actual names of the part but a friends said that I could tightin them down.
But with this question being asked if it is a tube amp could mean its time for new Power amp tubes. My Bravo 112 did that when it finally died.
YOU COULD ALSO KILL YOURSELF!!! TUBE AMPS ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND UNLESS YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE DEALING WITH HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS I SUGGEST YOU TAKE IT TO A PROFESSIONAL. AT THE VERY MINIMUM YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE TEST EQUIPMENT AND DISCHARGE POWER SUPPLY CAPACITORS SAFELY. A COURSE IN ELECTRONICS REPAIR IS A BIG HELP. THERE ARE SO MANY VARIABLES WHEN IT COMES TO GUITARS/AMP DESIGNS AND COMPONENTS THAT ITS PRETTY NIEVE FOR SOMEONE TO THINK THEY CAN JUST BUY A FEW BOOKS AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET "THE ULTIMATE TONE". THIS IS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN FIND IN PRINT ALONE. THE BOOKS ARE NECESSARY AND ARE VERY VALUABLE REFERENCES BUT IT TAKES YEARS OF EXPERIMENTING WITH DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF GUITARS/PICKUPS/CABLES/AMPS/TUBES/CABS/SPEAKERS TO EVEN BEGIN TO GRASP WHATS GOING ON. EXPERIENCE IS PRICELESS. MANY TIMES SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD THINK WOULD NOT SOUND GOOD ENDS UP SOUNDING AMAZING AND VICE VERSA. EVERY LINK IN THE GUITAR/AMP CHAIN MAKES A DIFFERENCE. YOUHAVE TO TRY EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU CAN CALL YOURSELF AN AUTHORITY AND OF COURSE THE END RESULT IS SUBJECTIVE. WHAT YOU THINK IS "THE ULTIMATE TONE" I MAY THINK IS HOGWASH AND VICE VERSA. GOOD LUCK!
YES !! tube amps CAN be VERY dangerous....if you read ANY of the books i have mentioned , they always start off with that warning.
and while being careless while working on tube amps can harm or kill you...so can working on your house or car...ect.
IF you actually read the service material , you will know what to watch out for and how to service your amp safely.
of course some people are not ment to change a light bulb....i trust you know who you are ,and if you are one of these people, let a professional handle all repair work for you.
and yes...a great sounding amp is a subjective thing indeed.
it is not just cold hard figures and facts.
but great tone is not sonic Alchemy....true, SOME people may not have what it takes to build their own amps...but remember, some of us DO !
what can it hurt to learn a lot about guitar tone, and see what we the players can do to improve it ?
i for one have spent a long time finding out what i want from MY perfect amp , and what i dont want.
i have also taken the time , and put the effort into LEARNING how amps are built , and why things work the way they do.
now with all of that being said...maybe my project wont pan out in the end...but maybe it will !
i just know that i dont mind taking a chance , i am not afraid of failure....at least i have the stones to try.
there are a LOT of like minded guitar players out there.....the number of DIY amp kits available today is amazing , so SOMEBODY has to be buying them.
i dont know your background...but to me low watt ,single channel tube amps are actually pretty simple creatures.
if you want complicated...try fooling with solid state or digital stuff !!!
oh yea...i DO understand how cables , speakers , pickups ,strings , PICKS , cabinets , our hands , the guitar , the volume and tone pots, and everything else ALL combine with the amp to make our tone.
we guitar players are a lot smarter than what SOME may think...and i think its cool that a growing number of us are showing an interest in how our equipment is made , and how our ideas can improve it.
if we all just sit around being afraid to try , how will we grow and improve ?
