I'm an inexperienced guitarist and when i go to pick up and play my axe, i have the enthusiasm yet the lack of knowledge of where to start.
I'm looking to learn something new everyday, and believe this is an effective way to go about it. However, I have trouble finding a starting point.
I know few chords (C, Cm, A, Am, E, Em etc) and I find it rewarding to read and play tabs of songs I enjoy.

Getting together with a friend who likes the same style of music as yourself and who is also learning guitar is a good starting point- you will tend to bounce ideas around and motivate each other. A teacher will do much the same thing.
Rather than starting with 5ths and riffs, a better starting point is a complete song on basic chords. Something slow in 4/4, like the old Guns And Roses version of Knockin'On Heaven's Door works well- it's just G D Am Am7 G D C C , with each chord getting down down down up down up strums and the Am7 the easy version, which is Am with the ring finger off.
Another great motivation-killer is a guitar with a lousy (high) action, of course, or a set of heavy strings on an accoustic.
