Post whats this bass?
can any one tell me anything about my bass? it's a mid '70's hoyer, shaped like an sg. solid mahogany body, 2 bill lawrence p/ups, chromed bridge and p/up covers (the p/up cover doesn't actually cover anything so it's more like a big hand rest). also it has a 19 ebony fingerboard and a marine ply bolt on neck. sounds like a rickenbacker on steroids too!

i pulled this up with Google, it's a product review of a bass that sound like what you are describing:

Product: Hoyer SG Bass
Price Paid: N/A
Submitted 02/26/2003 at 03:22pm by Anonymous

Features : 8
This Bass was build in the Mid of the 60ths.The serial number is
more a confusion and does not help to date it exactly. Its cryptic.
Anyway,a Hoyer Display inside the elctronic box says,90th anniversary
of Hoyer and this means, this Bass must have been build in 1964/65.

The body is Gibson SG/EB style.Longscale Bass with 18 Frets(!).
Has a solid bridge construction, wich seems to be an own development
and could be described as ancestor of Schallers 3D Bridge.
Two Pick Ups-Single Coils. One in Bridge position and near to end of the
neck.(remember 18 Frets).This PUs are Billy Lorento PUs-aka Bill
Lawrence.
The neck is bolton and has a Multilaminatneck. This means the neck is
glued together by 43 thin pieces of wood.(Such construction was popular
in the 60ths and can be traced as ancestor of Graphite necks).
Nearly no dead spots and very unsensitive to extreme climatic changes.
But at that times, such constructions offered a to linear, but
balanced sounds.
Electronic is Gibson like.A three way Toggle switch,a Volume and a
Tone control for each PU.
The bass has also two "Hats".Above the bridge and between the PUs,
like Rickenbacker or 10ths Fenders.

Sound : 8
I expected a Gibson EB01 sound,but I was surprised,about clear and
fundamental tone of this bass. When thinking of EB01 I think of
Reaggae Sounds.Humpa Humpa like.
The Bridge PU is very modern, reminds me more to a Vigier as to a
Jazz Bass. The Neck PU produces full, deep and warm sound, but it keeps
clear. The whole sound is never muffy or oldfashioned. For such an old
bass,it sounds really modern and flexible.
The bass has a long sustain and over the fretboard there is nearly
no deadspot. This is caused by the multilaminated neck. This comes
near to a linear, balanced sound, wich graphite necks later offered.
But it is more woody sounding. The EX Facto bass of Phil Kubicki
took this idea up again in the Mid 80ths.
In its borders the bass is very flexible. It produces of course the
vintage sounds, but it can sound also modern.

What makes me confused is the fact, that the Single Coil PUs are resistent against noise and hum.The elctronic wiring is more
complicated as standard ones, eventhough it is not an active bass.
As it is original I will not investigate, how it works.
But it works pretty good !

This Bass has a flexible sound.Has rich and full sound and good
electronics inside.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The bass was in good condition for its age.

Reliability/Durability : 10
It is reliable. It is nearly 40 years old and works still perfect.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Impossible, because the original manufacture company is already
out of race. The new Hoyer company has only the name.

But before the "crash" Hoyer offered a perfect service.

Overall Rating : 10
Hoyer alwaays made very good guitars and basses at a high quality
level.
Hoyer instruments can be traced as "custom" instruments.Always at the
maximum level of quality.
Hoyer basses are still underrated. If Vintage or the last original
series(wich are also more vintage now).

If you should fine an old Hoyer, check it,if it could be something
for you.

This SG-BASS is the money worth. You get a handmade, vintage bass with
a flexible sound.
