I think boss ds-1 and ds-2 are quite decent but I use pro co rat myself, for heavier stuff I would suggest digitech metal master I heard some good opinions about this gear.

Well I use Line6 ubermetal and for me it's the holy grail of metal distortion, it's even better then boss mt-2

I prefer my Digitech DeathMetal distortion over the Boss Metal Zone but they are very similar. The Digitech was also 80.00 cheaper! and I've used it regularly for almost 6 years without fail.

I used Boss OS-2 to play everything from blues to thrash Smile . It's good pedal but I need something that is good in drop C tuning... I think I'll buy Boss MT-2 or Ubermetal from Line 6.

out of my individuals I use my Boss MD-2, its a stronger disto than the DS-1's and DS-2's but not as much of a yelling sound as the Metal zones.

ProCo Rats are also good in heavy music. I like this "fat" drive Smile

Ive tried them all... some that stand out are the MXR distortion II in front of a dirty amp, an old EH vintage big muff. I just bought an Electro Harmonix "Metalmuff" Top Boost (6 knobs) and am pretty impressed initially... it is the first distortion box I have seen where u dont have to turn the gain knob all the way to the right... tons of gain! I'll have to experiment to see how it mixes up in my overall rig, but it has a BIG set of nuts!

I most often use a Boss Turbo Distortion.
Its got a great grungy rock tone. Also find it good for classic rock kind of sounds too. I love it.... also cool the fact it has two modes.

Just got a Boss OD3 and I'm looking fwd to try it out. I read some really promising reviews.
got it to replace my ibanez Ts7 as I found it hummed quite a bit,

Also have an Electro Harmonix Big muff USA which sounds great. Doesn't have enough note definition for most of the stuff I write though... you turn the drive right down and it still fuzzes like hell! Great for lead, mind.

Have to say I'm a big fan of Marshall amp overdrive too...

Christ, I want to find the first guy who slashed the amp speaker to get a fuzz tone and kiss him.... Laughing

Distortion forever!

Until recently I've used an 1970s MXR distortion that has NEVER ceased to amaze me with its warmth and tone!!! IT TOTALLY RAWKS!!!
I've had one guitar player offer me $500 for that one pedal (had to turn him down - it is such an integral part of my sound!!)
Currently playing around with a Digitech GSP21Pro that my son gave me... it's been pretty interesting in terms of the sounds that it's been letting me create. Although it was a pretty steep learning curve trying to figure out the various parameters of the multitudes of on-board effects.
Also use a series of stompboxes: Boss Chorus; Ibanez DDL; MXR Phase 90; Flanger and modified Cry Baby Wah (that has an INCREDIBLE sweep!!); and an Ernie Ball volume pedal.
