 underrated players...
Who do you guys think are underrated in the music world?
personally, i think Mark Tremonti (Creed, Alter Bridge) is a very underrated guitarist. He is a very good guitarist in technique (he can shred like no-bodies business) and has a very good knowledge of music theory.
what are your thoughts?

 Mr Underrated
I know some really good players that are overlooked. here's some
1- Alex Lifeson, he's the king in this category. Everyone's talkin' about Geddy Lee's (terrific, shall I say) Vocals and bass, or Neil Peart's (out of this world) drumming. But Alex really is the glue that holds Rush songs together
2- Billie Joe Armstrong. Maybe it's trendy to talk sh*t about punk rock, but this guy plays every single guitar lines on every Green Day's song and he has a wonderful tone and choice of notes.
3- The Edge. Man, this guy invented a guitar style... He's got tone, attitude, three chords and the truth !!!!
4- I must agree with you NHBluesMan, Mark Tremonti is a very good example of a guy that can shreds, but only plays for what the song calls for.
5- Jerry Cantrell. Another hot guy who respect the song.
6- The late and great Denis D'Amour from Voivod, we never ever read about him in any magazine, probably because he's from Quebec, Canada, but he has great taste and a special knack for playing outside the box. Rest in peace, and go jam with Dime !!!!!!!! That will make for amazing stuff.
I could go on and on on that topic, it is an endless journey.

I completely agree with Doc.Groove about Alex Lifeson. you have to give credit where credit is due.
there are a few others in my mind.
Tommy Bolin
George Harrison
Carlos Santana
Pete Townshend
Just to name a few.

I agree so far but there is one guitarist that is always getting ragged on that I think is very underrated. When you listen to old poison cd's the guitar work and solo's are awesome. They are very musical and some of them are shredding. So for people not to include CC Deville as underated is just crazy to me. Even your not a Poison fan you have to appreciate the musical ability and technique of this guy

Underrated...no way. he was always in guitar world magazine when creed came out...i mean always.
I dont think he is doing anything original at all. if anything he is overrated. Thats what i recon anyway.
I love to hear someone shred as much as the next guy...but so what if he can shred. SO can millions of other guitar players. personally i would rather originality.
An australian band which have an excellent guitarist (and he is also a really really good drummer) is Karnivool. This guy comes up with some of the most inovative shit i am telling you. Check them out if anyone gets a chance.

 Underrated
First of all, did someone just refer to Greenday as Punk? Wow, that's a slap in the face to the punk world. Anyway Doug Martsch from Built to Spill, Tree People, etc.. has to be one of the most innovative guitar players ever. Even though he is not underratted in the underground circuit, he still is when relating to popular music. Larry LaLonde, guitarist for Primus. Les gets all the credit for being a badass bass player, but this dude has to keep up and play solos to this shit, wow.

the late Criss Oliva from Savatage........Criss was an unbelievable talent.
the music world lost something special when Criss died.

actually yeah, i agree with that too. When MCR started out, they were really just the stereotypical emo-pop band, but since their latest album they've branched out alot, mainly thanks to Ray

Here is a guy who calls himself NO-YES.
I had the good fortune to record and mix a 3-song Demo for him.
I can't see this stuff cracking the charts but thats the point.
It is just acoustic guitar and vocal and I think it is pretty good.
There isn't any shredding going on which kind of suprised me because believe me, he can shred! I have recorded other projects for him and he is a dream come true to work with.

one guy who isn't necessarily 'underrated' but isn't that well known outside of the internet is Andy McKee. Easily the best acoustic guitar performer i've ever seen. You guys who have seen him know what i'm talking about. If you haven't seen him, go to youtube or google video and search 'Andy McKee Drifting' and you'll see what i mean
