Post the doors
I used to be a big Doors fan. I read the biography Nobody Here Gets Out Alive when I was but a young lad. I was fascinated with the weirdness they consisted of. I learned several of their songs like "Roadhouse Blues", "Love Me Two Times", "The End", "LA Woman", etc. Robby Kreiger fit the band to a tee. Unfortunatley, once Jim was gone, he encountered difficulties fitting in with other prospective bands, and therefore never regained success post-Doors.

My main influence was Jimmy Page and I aspired to learn every thing he ever did. I can truthfully claim that I mastered a good 80-90% of the Led Zeppelin library. I especiallly enjoy the acoustic pieces. Listen to Bron-Y-Aur off of Physical Graffiti. The man was a genius as far as innovating sound in the studio and was not afraid to experiment with different tunings.

Other favorites I've enjoyed playing over the years include the Eagles, the BEatles, Metallica, and believe it or not, a bit of classical. OH, let me not forget Rush. Just plain fun stuff to play.

My main rock influences are Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, and Steven Wilson

I also play a lot of Wes Montgomery-influenced jazz stuff.

And of course, Pops Walker and Elmore James have always been huge influences on my playing.

Post now there's some rare ones
Hey 'prism,

My dad was really into the jazz stuff like montgomery. Robert Fripp is a name I have not heard in a long time. I believe he collaborated with another edgy player: Adrien Belew (sp?). Gilmour, that's pretty mainstream, but I like what he does as a "feel" player. But who is the Steven Wilson guy? Never heard of him.

I've almost totally stopped doing "covers" even at home, except for when one of my original music bands plays one, which is rare.

That said, I like a wide variety of bands, though not much that's even vaguely recent. Mainly 60's (things like Stones, Who, Beatles, garage rock) and 70's things (especially 70's punk rock and 70's power pop), with a little 50's (especially Chuck Berry and rockabilly) and a little 80's (excluding hair bands and EVH/Vai?Satrianai type stuff) and not much more recent, since I started concentrating on originals in the 90's and into this century.

Two years ago I did get to play bass with the late great Bo Diddley at one show, but since it was his music it wasn't quite the same as just "doing covers."

Wink
