Depends on what you want to play.

Jacksons are usually considered "metal" guitars, Les Pauls more general rock.

I haven't played Jacksons but I'm not a metal person, so Les Paul for me.

either way , you will be getting a fine guitar ....

and just because the sweet high end Jacksons are made for metal dosent mean they arent good for other stuff too ....

a Ferrari can do 200 mph ... but it can also handle 55 .... and while a Ford Escort can handle the 55mph , it sure cant do the 200.

thats what i think ....

but Gibson , or Jackson .... you cant go wrong with either Smile

Nah, if he's playing blues rock or country rock or something, the Jackson'll flat out look funny. Even if it can handle the tones. And if it's got super hot pickups (or especially actives) it may not be able to do those tones very well either. So both from a "fashion" standpoint and a playing standpoint, it depends on what type of music he's playing and what feature the individual Jackson or LP has. Both will probably be good guitars (assuming he doesn't get a dog that slipped past QC or a used one that's been set up wrong or beaten up), but whether it's a good pick for the OP would depend on a bunch of variables we don't know.

For instance, there's a huge difference in a Les Paul with P-90's and a Les Paul with the 496/500 ceramic humbuckers.

gibson is a lot more universal I think... you can play shred, hard rock, metal, blues and even country on it... i've once seen a black metal band where one guitarist had LP custom Very Happy but if you are a metal guy and won't play anything else, jackson is for you... Twisted Evil but me personally, I'll take Gibson... cause it's a wonderful instrument and a piece of art... I've played several gibsons and they all sounded magical... Gibson is a guitar that has a spirit Very Happy

As stated before, it depends a lot on what you expect from the guitar.
Both are great guitars, and both of them can play whatever your fingers let you, if you know what I mean.

Perhaps if you could tell us a bit more about what you want to play with it.

Cheers
Axt
