 Preamp Tube Covers
What's the deal with the springy metal tube covers that go over the preamp tubes?
Do they serve any real purpose? I would think that letting them air out would be preferable to hiding them in small metal cylinders...

Preamp tubes don't usually need to dissipate much heat, and the covers are supposed to help with shielding and microphonics. I'm sure you can take them off without hurting anything, but you may notice a bit more hiss, hum, or other noise. If you don't, then I would say leave them off. Are you still having issues with your amp after changing the tubes?

I never changed them... everything is running smoothly like before.
I'm just more curious now about how everything works.

the metal covers also keep spring tension on the tubes ...which helps keep them seated in the sockets nice and tight , and the covers protect those fragile glass tone bottles .
they are good things to have in my opinion ....for whatever thats worth

The protection isn't probably too big of a deal if all your grill covers stay on, but the seating pressure could be very important if you transport your amp a lot. My V3's don't have them, and I have noticed the pre amp tubes needing to be pushed down from time to time. Good call, Chuck.

I remember a case of a guy who bought a Dynaco ST70 off of ebay. He was braggin' that he got it for less than the NOS tubes were worth, as long as they were operational. During shipping, the output transformer came loose, and wiped out all the tubes, board, and caps. Sad story.
I guess if a tube came loose, it could do a lot of damage to the other tubes, but if your OT comes off, you got bigger problems.

Soo Sam you own a carvin V3. Funny thing is, I've been hella interested in those amps for quite some time... but the only thing I have heard about them is that without a trusty noise gate... at high volumes you get allot of feedback... especially with active pickups... which is no good because my kramer is loaded with the 81/85 setup. what is your take on them?
