 Hey
The first solo i ever learned was pearl jam's evenflow when i was 13. I have been playing since i was 12 and for almost fourteen years that solo will never leave my brain. That is a very basic rock solo you can learn to get started if you like pearl jam. I advise you to not to learn solo's from artist, but to learn penatonic scales. These will help you understand using all your fingers on the neck. Once you learn those scales, you can quickly learn any metallica solo from and justice for all. when you progress... listen to satriani, hendrix or steve vai. Their solo's are basically entire songs, expand your mind with as much different material as possible. Listen, i can play any style because i like all types of music, and because i wanted to be a versatile musician, my style is blues metal...hmm did i say metallica earlier. lol
you can check me out playing here on my myspace page. www.myspace.com/teartheapathy It's under my about me section.

I take students through metallica stuff all the time and it is true pentatonic are used a lot in this (and in most songs under the massive rock umbrella) but the natural minor scale is what kirk uses the most, the flat 6th and 9th (add those to the pentatonic scale and you get a natural minor) can be found in all of his solos, lots of pull off patterns.. (2 note pull off one string the High E string to one note the one above, B string).
