after further review ....i DO have one thing to disagree with.

the article states that a "tube" somewhere in the system will warm up a solid state signal.
and the idea that you cant tell the difference between a solid state preamp , and a tube preamp is false...

i disagree .....i tested this theory today.

i switched between 2 Marshall 9000 series preamps ...a 9001 tube preamp , and a 9004 solid state preamp.

i ran them both into my vintage 1976 BGW 500D solid state power amp...that baby is a monster 250w per side stereo , 500w mono.
well , after a lot of A/B'ing between the two preamps , i would be amazed if anybody could pick out which was tube , and which was S/S.

perhaps if you are talking mic preamps , there may be a difference ,but i dont think it matters for guitar tone.

i still stick with my belief that its the power amp that does the warming....not the preamp.

anybody agree or disagree with that statement ?

I agree. If you know how to EQ you can get both SS and tube to sound identical. The exception to this rule? A really crappy SS, perhaps a modeling amp in particular, against a solid mid-high end tube amp. I think a tube in the signal WILL warm up an SS signal, but not just anywhere. If I mic up a guitar cab, I'm a fan of placing an ART tube mic pre in the mic line, and it does seem to smooth it out a tad. Otherwise, I'm with you Chuck.

i need to get one of those mic preamps .....

and i imagine there are cases where you can tell a difference , as you point out ...depending on WHAT preamp ,or effects you are using.

The ART one is worth it's weight in gold... literally. At $30 it's not even a bad investment if it turns out to be something you don't find useful. I've never actually used it for vocals but it works well on guitar and really does wonders for bass.

pretty good site.

I have had a fun in with some EXCELLENT solid state electronics, or perhaps I should say, coaxed some solid state electronics into making excellent sounds.

i think the more into high end preamps you get, the more variations of sound you get. i say this only with my personal experience with my bass preamp.
