Hey all I have just bought my first guitar, its an Encore E400B-OFT Solid Top Black Acoustic and I have snapped two strings trying to tune it. Now I need to buy some more, but I don't know which ones are the best to buy could someone please point me in the right direction, thanks

i am a fan of the Elixir phosphor bronze nanowebs in light gauge.....hands down, they are the best acoustic strings i have used.
i HIGHLY recomend them.

they'll work for all steel-string acoustic guitars that accept BALL END strings.

You can tell a guitar takes ball ends if you:
Take the broken strings off your guitar now. If they have very small metal balls with holes in them, then they are ball end strings.

If they have loops at the end, they're call LOOP END strings and you'll need to go find those strings in the store.

yeah, these ones look like ball end strings I think I will order some online. Whats the difference between extra light, light and medium and nickel and bronze etc?

light, medium, etc tells you how thick they are. The thinner they are, the easier they are to play--but they won't sound as deep as thicker strings. If you go too thick, it may mess up your guitar as well.

I believe the EJ15s are extra light.

wouldnt waste time ordrign off intenet just go tot eh store and get a dozen, while your add it change all teh strings. ad if your tunign adn it gets so tight you cant turn it anymore, its usually an indication to stop and go back...

Have a tuner or a piano ready to get your strings close to the right tuning. Then work them all in tune... do some bends at the 7th and 12th frets, then retune. Do this 3 times and you'll be set.

For acoustic, use Phosphor Bronze strings. Try a few brands to see what you like. If you use a light gauge (which you may want to do since you are new) It will be easier to play but sound brighter/thinner. Thicker gauges will have a stronger tone, but are harder to play. Change all your strings at the same time, not as they break...unless of course your string breaks in the middle of a gig.

Thanks all for your help. I got some 'Ernie Ball - Extra Slinky 2150' today these seem pretty good also I have some different brands on order and cheers for the advice about tightening strings as I nearly snapped another today

I'll second that on the Alchemy's and really, standard Martin 12 gauge strings sound nice as well.

i have tried both ....what about the Alchemy's do you like so much better ?

they sounded kind of dull on my Ovations ...compared to the Elixers.

i wonder if Ovations and Elixers are just a good combo ?

it was the same way with the Cleartones ....i put a set on my 1998 Collectors Ovation , and they were TERRIBLE.
but i played a Larivee that comes from the factory with Cleartones , and they sounded great on that guitar.

whats your take on this ?
