Recently, my project was to record "Just What I Needed" by the Cars. Simple, SIMPLE song, right? Holy crap! I suck! LOL! I wanted to do a single take for the bass with no punch in, but of course it sounds sloppy as hell. I've re-recorded the rhythm guitar 3 times now (finally sounds decent), and the lead guitar? Again, so simple! But Orr is doing some country-style hybrid picking lick after the first verse as a fill, and the first part of it, when I do it, sounds like I just fumbled the ball! LOL! Haven't even started on drum(-machine)s yet. A very humbling experience. The more I play it though, the better it gets, so there's hope.
I kinda think that guitar playing comes in levels. There is one point, at the beginning, where you learn to just play certain things, and being able to play them is enough to make you think you've got it. Then, years later, you start learning to play things WELL, or CLEANLY, and it's kinda like learning all over again. At least that's the way it's turning out for me. Guess it doesn't help that I've taken a 6 year hiatus from guitar playing as well..hehe!
That's the worst thing about guitar playing, it's like sports. You lose a lot of your abilities when you take time away from it. Even just having poor practice habits can make developing basic skills seem overwhelming. I feel for you!
