Post Unexplained noise from my Peavey XXX. HELP?!?!
Hey guys. So I recently shipped my Peavey XXX half stack across the US (in road cases!) to my new band's studio. I turned it on and the clean channel is fine. The problem is the distortion channels. I've tried every gain stage/amount and both types of OD and there is still this annoying fuzz/white noise. I play a Schecter Hellraiser with active EMGz and use a FX loop with several pedals and have never had this problem before. Anyone have any ideas on what happened and how to fix? I also took a look at all the tubes and they all still light up fine, so I'm assuming they are running hot and normal unless someone tells me otherwise.

I really need to find out what is wrong with it because, A) I don't want to buy a noise gate B) I don't want to have to take it to a shop and pay money and C) This noise is so freaking annoying during practice time.

Any and all suggestions are much appreciated.

Oh yeah, all the tubes in the amp are factory issued tubes. 12AX7s and 6L6s I believe. 4 of each.

Just a random thought: was it exposed to a few severe temperature changes? I remember having my amp go down from Michigan to Florida, back to Michigan, and it had a really weird buzz for about 2-3 weeks after. I always thought it was a myth about teperature changing, but it did finally go away on its own, and it was a short 2-day trip. Freezing winter one day, hot sunny weather the next, and back to snow that second day. Just a thought, as said.

Post Hmm
Hmm this is a tricky one since you mention most of things that can possible be wrong and you checked em out......

Check each on of your cables (from guitar to Amp input,THE BACK ON FROM THE AMP HEAD TO THE CAB AS WELL), If you use batteries on ur pedals (which im probably guessing you dont since you have mutiple pedals and AC adapters/Daisy chains would save you money) id say check the pedals as well.

[/b]hmm but i doubt its something i mention above, last things i can think off are:

maybe a pedal effect is starting to FaiL..... Or your amp has suffered somkind of damage or internally fucked up, maybe not something big but hey you never know! Did you ship ur amp with real good protection around it?... (When you ship shit almost anywhere EVEN WITH PROTECTION... , trust me as much as it may say Caution, Fragile , or DELICATE Item workers UPS,FED EX, USPS, DHL... whatever company it is, the workers have jobs to do and assignments to complete by the end of the day and So most of the time in a rush, (im telling you from experience and working at some of these) they will throw your shit from the carrier, to the warehouse, to a pallet/ or vehicle/plane (whatever it is gonna be carried on) and samething when unloading so maybe it coulda suffered somekind of damage... Im just throwing this as a Possiblity. check your guitar out fast as well just try using it on another amp see if it sounds normal and working good, but i highly doubt it ur guitar.

Im sorry to say but if non of this fixes your problem i think your solution is gonna be A NOISE GATE, if that dont work (RETURN the gate, then go to a professional) BUT DONT DO THIS just yet, wait to see if a few more people respond to your question/Forum post

there is a lot to this .....components in your amp can absorb moisture and that will cause odd noises.

point a fan at the back of your amp and let it dry out ....see if that helps.

Tubes. I worked in shipping/receiving for Guitar Center for 4 years so I've seen a lot of tube amps get f***ed up. You have to pack them very well when shipping them through UPS or equivalent. Tubes can easily get damaged in shipping. If the noise exists as soon as you turn standby on with the volume all the way down, it's your power tubes.

Yeah it was in extreme cold when I mailed it. The midwest was in a snowstorm and then it came to NJ in about 20degree weather. If my tubes are screwed up...will swapping 'em out fix it? Or is there a possibility that there would be something left from the tubes in the sockets? I've never had problems with my amp before, so sorry if I'm asking dumb questions.

Do that test I told you about first. Turn the amp on with the volume all the way down. If you hear that noise go ahead and replace the power tubes. It's as easy as replacing a light bulb. And if those are the same tubes the amp came with it might be a good idea to replace them anyway. How long have you had the amp? If the noise appears when you turn the volume up it's a preamp tube, which usually don't need to be replaced too often.

So it turned out to be a combination of a bad cab I was using at practice that wasn't my own, and a slight microphonics in the preamp tubes. Thanks for the help guys! I'll be replacing my tubes now and bringing in my cab to the studio.
