Post Help Deciding on an Amp
Hello, yes I'm new here so if I sound stupid thats why. Anyway i was looking into finding a nice amp that i could eventually play for small venues. I want to get a nice tone that doesn't sound bad at higher volumes (so i can play over a drummer). I play a range of things but mostly rock so...if that helps, also i have a 500$ budget. Thanks in advance for all your replies. Cool

Chuck and I were debating the Peavey Windsor head as a good value. Go for that plus a used cab and you'll be right in at $500.

Thanks, I'll have to look into that. I just saw a Marshall Limited Edition MG100HDFX and MG412A Half Stack Package on guitarcenter.com for 600$ which would be nice to buy all at once so ya... thoughts on that?

go to the store and get it for less than $500.

have you played through the Marshall MG100 yet ?
to me they are good solid state amps, the cabinets are small and the speakers are kinda cheesy ....

the Peavey Windsor is a great sounding amp ...and it wont break the bank.
a great tube amp to look for used is the old Peavey VTM60 and VTM120.
the are single channel amps ...but they are beasts ! i love them....and recomend them highly.
i would rather buy a high quality used speaker cab than a crappy new one.
a cheap cabinet with cheap speakers will not let you get the most from your amp.

as a matter of fact...i would spent the bucks on a good cabinet FIRST....then upgrade the amp later if need be.

i have an old Marshall Valvestate that sounds VERY average thru the mg 4x12 and cheesy celestions , but sounds pretty hot thru my old Peavey 412m loaded with Celestion G12K85's.

your amp will only sound as good as your cabinet and speakers.

did i confuse you yet ? Smile

Im currently using

While I like it, it just doesn't have that tone that lights my fires.
It does however get insanely loud. Alot louder than you would think anyways.
Since the Distortion to me on this particular head isn't very good to me I usually run an
effects board thru it for that. Anyone else have any complaints about the AVT series amps Marshall
made? I'm not as impressed with it as I thought I would initially be.

Post Hmm.
Check out the Crate Shockwave Half stack or Crate Todalwave Halfstack. Hmm i have the shockwave, and it never failed me,if had it 4 yrs, sounds good too,has 3 channels, comes with footswitch for Clean channel,Rythm channel, and solo channel. Check it out, better yet if you can find a used one... that be pretty sweet and cost less! I personally dont like that marshall mg100. That amp looks tiny but thats not what matters if you like it, then YOU LIKE IT, buy it but look into used ones.... theyll come with you for a cheaper price!! I buy my guitar pedals used as well, they come out to half the price and work perfectly!.

But if anything, dont buy an amp online, well its gonna cost more cuz of shipping and weight, and well its bad enouph you cant sit down and play the amp online! Just go to a local music store and check out some amps (USED ONES AS WELL!) but if you looked for a store and seriously feel there is no Guitar stores near by then you would have to make your purchase online but im sure there is a store close by somewhere! there always it!

same here bro... go to stores and canvas what you can so that you can test and assess for yourself... feel the sound and weigh in the price, but for an amp worth $500 that would be a sweet deal already... Laughing

B-52 AT-100, made in USA. It's based on the mesa boogie triple rectifier, people claim it is just about as good. It's a tube amp, six hundred dollars, and is built well, i was going to buy one, but decided to get a much more expensive amp, I dont know if it was worth it. I played one of these at guitar center as well, they are solid as rock, and everyone has nothing but good to say about these amps, including me. At least check this amp out.

I like marshalls MG line.

I personally play a jcm2000 DSL50 (after my JCM 800 2204 got stolen, and a 2210 before that) and really wanted something smaller for practice in smaller rooms, yet loud enough to play over a drummer.

I tested a few against the mesa's and Vox amps and like the mg30dfx. Although you could get a bigger amp, this had the perfect size to volume level for me. The tone was also the best (my main concern)

Just remember the bigger the venue, their going to start micing your amp / cabs. I would say 2x12 is plenty big for a 2000 seater all the way down to a small venue.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide.
