 Tech enquiry: Guitar Cab
Hi all,
I have a problem after experimenting with an amp and cab. Heres the deal. I connected a 100w head to an 8x10 cab (8x25w=200w) and the volume was loooow. The same head went into a 4x10 cab (4x25w=100w) and the volume was much better. In order to get an equal volume from the 8x10 do i need to use a 200w head? Or disconnect four of the speakers in the 8x10? I'm a beginner, but my guess is that the output is getting spread out twice as much in the 8x10, resulting in a lower volume.
Any guidance would be appreciated!
Ta!

Dood, I would be VERY careful running a head that is probably designed to handle a load of 100W at 8 OHMS into an 8X10 cabinet that has twice the load and therefore twice the impedance requirement. Plug it in, crank it up, and watch your amp croak. You basically have it figured. But what I cant figure out is why the hell would you want to plug into an 8X10 cab. It would sound like crap on a stick.

Hey thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention i'm using it for bass, but i thought i would have been getting a decent sound out of the thing given that cabs such as ampeg svt810 is the same sort of set up - Again, uneducated guess but i cant see why that wouldnt follow. Would a 200w head give me a better sound?

as long as the impedance of the cab matched the head , you should be fine.
tube amps do not like mismatches !
very bad things can happen if you mismatch the amp and cab....be very careful.
the volume drop could be due to speaker efficiency.
that makes a heck of a difference.

isn't it possible to ruin your amp if you try to drive speakers that require more than your amp can handle?

well, i guess. meaning, you're pushing your amp to be louder than it actually can be

I would think it would ruin the speakers first.
Or, am I wrong?

i doubt that you could hurt your amp....as long as you have the correct speaker impedance .
an incorrect load on the transformer is the thing to watch out for.
as long as your amp has enough power to move the speakers you will be ok.

I think you'd be blowing out speakers first... then again I personally wouldn't even attempt it to find out.

i think that is why most amp companies make and amp and then a speaker cab to go with it. most of the time it is just a marketing ploy... but i think some companies know what they are doing

yeah, but some of us would want to change speakers.
I changed the speakers in my Vox, but like a dumbass I didn't pay attention to the ohm load.
it cut my power in half!
but the speakers were given to me so no loss there, just a day wasted opening and closing the amp

is your Vox a tube amp ?
and if it is ...does it have a selectable speaker ohm settings or just one ?
i assume it had an 8 ohm speaker ?
