 metalcore
why all the hate for metalcore? if you like metalcore please state why and if not please state why not!!
I like Metal and i also like Metalcore i am not 15 and full of teenage angst i am 23! i think that the riffing is really effective and is always catchy! not the most technical of riffing like Necrophagist or cannibal corpse but still takes a level of skill to play.
killswitch Engage and As I Lay dying are among my favorites!!

ok...here is my take on it.
is it that growly shouting stuff ?...if so i hate it.
i have heard bands that i like....the music kicks mucho ass...then the "singer" opens his mouth.
EJECT .....put in something else.
i prefer singers who actually .....SING .
that is my beef with all that new metal stuff.
a lot of the music is cool.
now keep in mind...i am an old fart

Just think of the voice as another instrument.
Growling, screaming, whatever... it's just like adding distortion to your guitar signal.
It adds aggression, tension, blah, blah... I've told my wife all this crap, but she still can't stand Pantera, Mastodon, Children of Bodom.
I really get turned off by alot of it, cuz it all sounds the same. Give me a fuckin' band with identity.
I think these singers (screamers) need to take another look at Phil Anselmo. The guy can shake the foundations of the Earth with his growls, but he can be so soulful. It kind of a mix.
Man, I hate talking this much, but bear with me
It's cool to growl if you can hear the guy's voice in it... like a distorted guitar. You can still hear the tone... the identity.
But most of these new bands, yes most, suck. Hard!
They're trying to do what they like at a new level, I can dig that. Too bad they all had the same idea at the same time.
These guys will disappear like the hair metal bands and we'll be left with the cream of the crop.
Sorry, for some reason I felt like ranting.
Didn't know I felt so strongly about this!

I love metalcore.
The vocals take work to appreciate but once you do, you really start to love it. Some people say things like "You can't understand what in the world he's saying!" to which I reply, "Can you understand Creed, or Dave Matthew's Band, or all of Led Zeppelin, or any of these other bands you like?" Then they will say "It has no tone or melody!" to which I reply, "Well, yes it does, it just isn't as clear. You don't complain about crash cymbals even though they are louder and more atonal than screaming."
You shouldn't just give up on the vocals. They really add an excellent dynamic to music in general.

I understand where BroLaw is coming from, but in actuality, doing those puke vocals (and not destroying your vocal chords in the process) does take a bit of practice and knowledge. Same thing with rock screams, etc. If you do them wrong, your voice is shot sooner than later, but by doing them right, you can actually strengthen your vocal cords.
But yeah, all cookie monster vocals and no singing gets old after a while.

Eric Adams of Manowar will growl or scream ...shout...or sing softly ...whatever the song calls for at that moment.
THAT kind of growly stuff i like....not the "all cookie monster, all of the time" vocals.
of course , Eric Adams is a rare talent .....not everybody has the pipes he has.
