Post Aeolian scale. Dumb question!
Ok, I am confused about scales in general, not just Aeolian. I thought I had scales pretty well thought out until I noticed something:

I have seen both ways to do Aeolian:

1st way
|-----|-----|--1--|--2--|-----|--4--|-----|
|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|--4--|-----|
|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|--4--|-----|-----|
|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|--4--|-----|-----|
|--1--|-----|--2--|--3--|-----|-----|-----|
|--1--|-----|--2--|--3--|-----|-----|-----|

and:
|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-3--|
|-----|--1--|-2---|-----|-3--|
|--1--|--2--|-----|-3--|-----|
|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|----|
|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-3--|
|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-3--|

Which way is correct? And which one carries the minor scale(black metal-ish) feeling? Question

That might be the problem!

Could you post the correct one and why am i reading scales wrong? Those scale tabs were referenced from The Guitar Grimoire by Karl Fischer

wait... hahahahahahaha. i'm an idiot

i was reading them wrong!!! i was looking at them sideways trying to figure them out. ooops!

now, to answer your question, they are both right. when you break a scale down using intervals like it's supposed to be done, it doesn't matter how you play it or what fingering you use. from looking at these two, i'm pretty sure their the same scale. granted, it's 7:30 in the morning and i don't have a guitar in my hands but i'll try to make sure when i get the chance. Razz but this scale holds a pretty black metalish sound if you have the right distortion and such. is that what you play?

they are both correct - just different ways of playing them . Aeolian scale is a natural minor . i guess you could use it for black metal although i would imagine a harmonic minor scale to be darker . in A minor that would read A B C D E F G# A

Awesome, thank you kind sir! Yes-Black Metal,Prog Metal and Thrash are my favorites to play. Please tell me when you get a chance if they are the same scale!

they are both the same scale

Post same
Its the same set of notes. You get the feel from a mode depending on what bass note or harmony is under the melody your playing or leas part. if you play this scale while someone plays another note in the mode on bass.. you will be hearing the mode or scale based off of the note they are playing. it is all an illusion of sorts.

yeah, they are the same scale...the scale doesn't determine the musical style...all scales are used in different types of music in one way or another though there is more emphasis on certain ones for different genres. When it comes to metal of any kind the most popular modes or scales used are natural minor, harmonic minor, phyrgian, chromatic, and locrian. Some bands will use a mixture of these scales within the song to base their riffs and leads upon. The only difference between the two minor scales you posted is the lack of having to shift down a fret for the 2nd or 9th note in the scale for the first diagram; position shifting occurs on the B and E strings and that shift is easier to navigate for some than it is to have to shift down to a fret to grad the 2nd or 9th scale degree.

same scale, different shapes, there are a few shapes for the same scale, best to learn one thats the most comfortable fingering for you and make sure you know one off the A (5th) string as well but having said that you really should know the scale all over the fretboard for total freedom (yes in all 12 keys, sorry)

the harmonic minor is a very cool sound but keep in mind the larger interval of a minor 3rd will give you a more what most call a 'middle eastern' sound (not sure i agree with that) but for a really sad dark sound thats not too far out to make it sound like crazy jazz I think this scale will suit you fine as this is what most use

oh and Aeolian is the 6th major mode and is the natural minor scale, you might want to check out its relative major the Ionian (just the major scale) so you can get some different sounds in the same key and hell why your at it learn all the mode, doesnt take as long as you might think!

happy strumming/shreding Smile

Ok,I thought I had it. Apparently I do not.

If both of these scales are the same then why do they note share the same sequence of notes?

because it's all based on the intervals between the notes that you play. on those scales, you are skipping a note or adding a few notes at the end. at least that's what i see
